The French "lycée" (higher secondary school), pupils are faced with successive subjects choices, and with the choice of Baccalauréat's speciality. This paper investigates from empirical data how these choices are progressively generated, along time and under which academic and social mechanisms. Those academic subjects choices prove to be influenced less by educational factors than by the concern to optimize one's schooling career. As long as the different routes are perceived as a hierarchy, and if concern for distinction and utilitarism are prevailing, the relevance of the notion of project has to be questionned.

This article aims to provide a starting point for reflection about the conditions required for building up an academic elite in mandatory school systems, through international quantitative evaluation.The academic elite are defined, here, not in terms of the educational level they have reached, but through the skills levels attained: the proportion of students who have reached, in each country, the highest level of skill on the main section of the PISA 2000 test. Production of written French skills by first generation immigrants in working age

This paper aims to identify factors explaining the level of proficiency in written French by immigrants in working age, knowing that few research has been conducted in France on this issue. The originality of this paper is the stochastic production frontier model to explain the scores in written French and the productive performance of immigrants (considered as producers of their own skills). The main results show that mother tongue, age at immigration, social life and mother's diploma are elements which influence the effectiveness of this production.
